Hello! I'm Virginie Lavallée, your project management bestie, and I'm so glad you're interested in The PROD Bootcamp. It's the very first course we ever launched at The Happy Producers, and it's a project management and coordination course that has truly transformed my own experience in production. Since creating and using this course, both for my team and then sharing it worldwide, I've experienced less stress, less overtime, more fulfillment, and more profitability.
Let me rewind a bit and tell you how this course came to be. About four years ago, I purchased the domain name for The Happy Producers, although at the time, my consultancy business had a French name, "Leu Ensemble," which quickly proved impractical as most of our clients were English-speaking. (By the way, that's why I have this charming accent – my first language is French, and I'm French Canadian from Montreal!).
As consultants, my team and I found ourselves repeating the same advice and addressing the same challenges for many of our clients. We wanted to help a wider audience without being limited by selling our time, moving towards a mission-based, people-centric business. A significant need we identified, both for ourselves and our peers, was training specific to the animation, VFX, and gaming industries. We had tried other trainings, like documentary film trainings, but they often didn't translate well to our specific needs.
The initial idea for this training actually came to me even earlier, six years ago, before The Happy Producers was even launched. I was working at an animation studio in Montreal on a project called "The Beach Buds Bio," a 52-episode series of 11 minutes each, totaling almost 10,000 shots over a two-year period. In series production, velocity is the main challenge; you have high volume but need to stay very tight on deadlines to avoid things getting out of hand.
About four or five months into "The Beach Buds Bio," as shot creation began, I noticed a slowdown in animation production, leading to increased stress and overtime creeping up. Deliveries that were due on Friday often extended late into Friday nights, which was simply unsustainable for me and my team for over a year. What was unique about this project was that I couldn't even blame the clients, who were incredibly reasonable and great creative partners. This meant I had to focus on what we controlled within our own team and how we could optimize our internal processes.
During a summer when my coordinators and project managers were on vacation, I took over some of their tasks. By attending their meetings, reviews, dailies, and scrums, I observed something critical: everyone was doing things just a little bit differently. Whether it was how notes were taken, playlists were used, emails were formatted, or meetings were led, this inconsistency was confusing even to me, and I quickly realized it was confusing for our artists as well. I saw that our efficiency was "bleeding" due to these varied approaches.
My audacious goal became to have our Friday night delivery ready by Thursday. This would create a crucial buffer for any unforeseen issues like rendering problems, sick artists, or technical glitches, preventing lateness from snowballing into subsequent episodes. I decided to train the whole team on how we could streamline and simplify our processes. Another pain point was onboarding new team members who often brought different methods.
Our solution was to document all our processes. We created our own tool, which we called the "prod encyclopedia," and it's now part of The PROD Bootcamp course. This documentation helped us gain clarity, simplify tasks into four or five-step processes, and identify blind spots or areas where we were overcomplicating things.
We dedicated one hour a week for eight weeks to this training. By the end of the eighth week, with the same people, pipeline, and clients, our deliveries were consistently ready by Thursday morning. This was a significant improvement from late Friday nights. My team and I were blown away by these results.
But then we realized the most potent and beloved part of the training was everything related to mindset, soft skills, and human aptitudes. While technical training (for software, spreadsheets, and dates) was available, the human element—managing emotions, expectations, frustrations, communication, conflict, and motivation—was largely overlooked. This training not only provided clarity in tasks like note-taking and meeting leadership but also established a foundation for handling difficult situations within the team, such as disagreeing with client feedback or managing internal conflicts.
I'm a strong believer in the power of mindset, which is why I incorporated it into the training. Research I found indicates that up to 80% of our success is determined by our mindset or outlook. This was the "elephant in the room" in our fast-paced, competitive, feedback-heavy industry.
The eight-week training ultimately led to a 20% gain in efficiency. Artists benefited from greater clarity, allowing them to focus more on their craft. This optimization enabled my team to successfully deliver all 52 episodes of "Bio and the Beach Buds" and even shave off the last four weeks of the project without working overtime, even during summer vacations.
The effectiveness of this training became even more evident during the pandemic. Despite initial nervousness about remote work, my team experienced a boost in efficiency. This was because we had already invested in simplifying, optimizing, and streamlining our processes, documenting them in the Prod Encyclopedia. This ensured everyone had the necessary information and clarity, even without a coordinator physically present. Crucially, our work on mindset meant we were prepared to act cohesively as a team in unexpected and challenging situations.
When I eventually left the studio to pursue feature film work, I felt a responsibility for my team's well-being. I realized the training had the potential to impact many more people beyond my studio, helping peers worldwide experience less stress, greater efficiency, fulfillment, and profitability.
The PROD Bootcamp officially launched to a worldwide audience online in 2022. The initial cohorts were live, which allowed for valuable feedback and the addition of bonuses. It later transitioned to a pre-recorded course to accommodate global time differences and busy production schedules, ensuring a low-stress, empowering, and self-care-like "Zen experience". We even coined the term "onboarding the Zen pontoon" to describe the state of our efficient, low-stress production after the training. When you enroll in The PROD Bootcamp, you learn how to create your own Zen pontoon!
Four years after acquiring The Happy Producers domain, we've enrolled over 400 students worldwide in our various courses. We've partnered with local and international institutions like universities and film/television councils, and I've been invited to speak at numerous international industry events.
The PROD Bootcamp, as our foundation course, is our most popular offering. It truly transforms the production experience:
* From overwhelm to levelheadedness
* From chaos to clarity
* From overtime to work-life balance
