Starting an animation business in 2025,Ā is this a good idea?
Whatever the industry, starting an entrepreneurial journey is an immense challenge in itself.
What about starting this journey and choosing an industry that is going through massive structural changes? Is this recklessness?
Over the last year, I have met with dozens of established and aspiring animation entrepreneurs. Each of them comes in with their own version of a successful business, each of them trying to think outside the box to create jobs and tell stories close to their hearts.
Although they reached out to me for help, support, and mentoring, these contacts were not one-sided; they fed my hope and helped me keep my passion for this industry burning hot!
The real question is not whether the animation industry is a viable playground for new business, but rather what problems the mediums of animation can solve for our communities and our audiences.
Change won't happen in a vacuum.
Change will happen as a result of the effort of countless passionate individuals who will not give up on their dream to bring stories to life. Through the passion and eagerness to contribute to an industry they are passionate about, these new business folks are feeding and enriching the animation industry.
So, no. Starting an animation business in 2025 is not reckless.
It is immensely courageous.

If I teach 100 people how to start an animation business and only 10% succeed, is it worth it?
If these 10 successful businesses each create 9 jobs, the entire group would have benefited. So, yes. It is worth it.
Sure, that is an oversimplification.Ā But isn't there some hope in this belief? To think that the best way to help the people of the animation industry is to teach them how to start new businesses, to enable them to innovate, and create new business models more adapted to today's reality.
The old business models aren't a problem.Ā
The problem was that this model might have been too homogeneously adopted.
New business models are needed to serve the full diversity of needs of our modern world.
From VTubers' assets, to merchandise visualisation, to Location-Based Entertainment (museums, live events), to educational videos, the need for animation is broader than we think.
So, how can we create more resilient businesses and increase the chance of long-term success?Ā
By strengthening the ecosystem.Ā
By increasing opportunities, by enabling people to take calculated risks and try new business endeavors. By sharing what they've learned with others, we keep on strengthening our collective business muscle.
Over the last few months,Ā The Happy ProducersĀ andĀ TAAFIĀ have collaborated on the CABA, the Canadian Animation Business Accelerator. Along withĀ Karen Jackson,Ā Virginie LavallĆ©e, and a curated group of guests, experts, and mentors, we have been helping 8 new businesses build a solid foundation.
